The use of bee products in natural medicine dates back to 2000 B.C. Some of these remarkable compounds include pollen, propolis, royal jelly, and honey. Another bee product that has long been known for its therapeutic activity is honey bee venom. In fact, scientific literature contains more than 1,500 articles on the substance. 

Bee venom contains a complex mixture of at least 18 active substances. These include peptides, enzymes, active amines, sugars, lipids and amino acids. Melittin, a polypeptide, makes up 50% of the dry weight of bee venom.  It is presently one of the most potent anti-inflammatory agents known. It works in the body by stimulating the release of cortisol, a natural steroid hormone, secreted by the adrenal cortex. Melittin also contains antioxidant properties and has been found to lower blood pressure. 

A clinical trial with 20 arthritis patients commisioned by Nelson Honey in Auckland, New Zealand found that 66% of patients experienced a reduction in pain levels and an increase in mobility when treated with Bee Venom honey.  A second trial, monitored by Dr Alan Doube, involved 97 arthritis sufferers.  Results showed a statistically significant improvement in the level of pain and mobility in those with osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.  In both trials, patients remained on their regular therapies, which included non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and paracetamol.

I have used it for several years as a general muscle relaxant similar to Deep Heat. It was especially helpful with the discomfort and pain I experienced after a serious car accident some years ago when I had pulled tendons in my shoulder.
